How to Style Large Canvas Wall Art: Sizes, Placement and Ideas
A single large canvas can do more for a room than a whole shelf of small decor. But bold, colorful art can feel intimidating to place. These are the rules of thumb we use, whether you're styling a living room, a bedroom, or a home office.
Start with size
Our canvases come in three sizes. Here's where each tends to work best:
- 16x20: desks, shelves, entryways, hallways, and gallery walls.
- 24x30: above a console, dresser, or nightstand, or over a smaller sofa.
- 30x40: the statement size. Use it over a sofa, a bed, or on any wall that needs a focal point.
A common designer rule of thumb is that art over furniture should span roughly two-thirds of the furniture's width. When in doubt between two sizes, go bigger.
Hang it at eye level
The center of the piece generally belongs around 57 inches from the floor, which is roughly average eye level. Over a sofa or bed, leave about 6 to 8 inches of space between the furniture and the bottom of the frame so the two feel connected.
Let the art set the color palette
With a colorful canvas, you don't need to match everything. Pull one or two colors from the artwork into a pillow, a throw, or a plant pot, and keep the rest of the room calmer. Neutral walls let pieces like our Cosmic Sunset canvas or Toxica take center stage.
One hero piece or a grouping?
For a clean, modern look, hang one large piece and give it room. For more personality, pair a 30x40 with a couple of 16x20 pieces in a loose cluster, keeping the spacing between them consistent.
Ideas by room
- Living room: a large canvas centered over the sofa.
- Bedroom: a statement piece above the headboard.
- Home office: a mid-size piece in your line of sight for creative energy.
- Entryway: a smaller canvas that greets guests.
